‘Fast and Furious’ actor Paul Walker dead after car crash

Actor Paul Walker, best known for his role in the Fast and Furious franchise, died on Saturday afternoon after a car accident in Valencia, CA. He was 40 years old.

“It is with a truly heavy heart that we must confirm that Paul Walker passed away today in a tragic car accident while attending a charity event for his organization Reach Out Worldwide. He was a passenger in a friend’s car, in which both lost their lives. We appreciate your patience as we too are stunned and saddened beyond belief by this news. Thank you for keeping his family and friends in your prayers during this very difficult time. We will do our best to keep you apprised on where to send condolences,” a post on his official Facebook page said.

“Paul was truly one of the most beloved and respected members of our studio family for 14 years, and this loss is devastating to us, to everyone involved with the Fast and Furious films, and to countless fans.  We send our deepest and most sincere condolences to Paul’s family,” a rep for Universal said in a statement.

A spokesperson for the Santa Clarita Valley Station confirmed to EW that deputies responded to a traffic collision in Valencia on Saturday afternoon and discovered a vehicle in open flames. The accident appeared to be a single-car collision against a fixed object near the road. The fire department extinguished the flames and located two bodies trapped inside the vehicle, both of whom were later pronounced dead.

Something weird is going on with the colleges up in Boston. This week, two respected institutions of higher education, Emerson College and Harvard University, announced that they were partnering up with celebrities for special events. While it's not unusual for public figures to take an interest in furthering their education, or even for colleges to recruit famous faces for publicity, the choices that Emerson and Harvard made were so unusual, it almost makes us worry that Boston universities may be losing their minds.

If there was one takeaway from last night’s show, it was that Lady Gaga knows what you all are saying about her. And in the constant jostling for pop-culture supremacy, one of Gaga’s advantages has been that, when she allows it, she often comes across as a down-to-earth goofball. And happily, last night viewers mostly got the silly theater kid and not the art-house provocateur, which led to an overall enjoyable 90 minutes that, while not always laugh-out-loud hilarious, was consistently amusing.

From the moment she busted out of the doors in a 1930s stage costume straight out of Chicago, there seemed to be two goals for the evening. 1.) Remind people that she’s the pop star, who can, you know, really belt; and 2.) Send up her image before the bloggers can. On both of those counts, she succeeded. She didn’t have a super viral moment like her “Three Way (Golden Rule)” sketch from the last time she was a musical guest (with host Justin Timberlake), but with only one real dud, she anchored what was easily one of the better episodes of the season so far.

Her monologue consisted of singing (of course!) a jazz-y version of “Applause” that segued into “New York, New York” as a somewhat nervous-seeming Gaga did what she does best: Just plain singing. Point of fact: Much like Miley Cyrus should really consider the country music her voice seems best suited to, Gaga should really consider a jazz album. “Applause” sounded much more impressive here than it does on the radio, and the fact that she regularly turns her pop hits into jazz ditties when she performs them live tells me she knows how well the genre suits her.

Can love be selfish? If it causes an entire city to detach from its underpinnings and sail across the ocean, it just might be. Deadline reports that Will Smith and director Shawn Levy are teaming up for the upcoming fantasy film, City That Sailed, which will tell the story of a New York father (Smith) whose love for his estranged daughter, living overseas, is so strong that it causes the island of Manhattan to break free from the rest of New York City and sail across the Atlantic towards her. Shawn Levy, who directed other bombastic family films like theNight of The Museum series should feel right at home with this seafaring island family flick. Writer Audrey Wells (The Game Plan,Under the Tuscan Sun) is on board as screenwriter.

While this film sounds like a funny and harmless family film about making and mending connections, one man’s reunion movie is clearly everyone else’s disaster film. What about the insane amount of damage to infrastructure and the loss of human life that would occur if Manhattan suddenly jettisoned across the Atlantic? But at least this one guy got to see his daughter again. It’s not like he could have booked a flight or anything, or (if he's low on cash) sent a nice postcard. On thing's for sure: New Yorkers are gonna be pissed when they find out ther real reason Midtown is the newest addition to the European Union.

JAKE GYLLENHAAL PUNCHED A MIRROR!

On Wednesday, Jake Gyllenhaal was sent to a Los Angeles emergency room after punching a mirror and severely cutting his hand. Don't worry, Gyllenhaal wasn't worked up in some sort of violent spree or drug-induced rage that provoked the incident. It was just Gyllenhaal being an awesome actor. 

According to a source, Gyllenhaal was on the set of his new movieNightcrawler when the incident occurred. "His character was looking into a mirror during the scene and punched the mirror in anger and broke it, cutting himself so bad he had to be taken to a hospital." The actor needed stitches but apparently is doing fine, even returning to the set the next day.
